Is it OK for my 6 year old cats to sleep on a heated mattress all day and night?

January 25th, 2011

I live in the North East US and it is cold here in the winter.

One of the things I do to save money is to turn down the heater during the day. I try to keep it so that the cats can curl up and be warm and save me some money on heating. Well I recently got a heated mattress pad to sleep on for myself and the cats love it. They have now claimed the bed as their own as long as the heated pad is turned on they are there, curled up, sleeping.

My question is, is it bad for them to stay on the heated areas all day? I know that if a person has a hurt area and you apply heat you are only supposed to leave it on for certain amounts of time and then remove it for a while, repeat. I am just afraid it’s bad for them but they seem to absolutely love it and as a typical pet owner, I like to try and spoil them as much as I can as long as it is healthy.

Thanks!

How to clean urine from feather mattress?

January 2nd, 2011

I live with my grandparents and my grand-mom told me to ask this question on here, because my grand-dad has wetted the bed, (yes he has a bed wetting problem) we think it may be bladder issues, how ever he does smoke constantly and because my grand-mom has a breathing condition and is on oxygen and heart issues, the smell is troublesome, and many doctors told her to stay away from smoke because it is not healthy, but my grand-father fails to realize that, and because of this, my sister had to go to the hospital because she has Asthma so smoking caused her to be sick.

HOWEVER

We have a regular mattress, covered by a feather bed, and a foam mattress on top, and is filled with urine and smoke smell by my grand-dad, how can we get rid of the smoke smell AND the urine before it goes to mold? We don’t want fungal growth growing in the inside of the mattress, IT IS VERY UNSANITARY.

Tips on how to do so, gets an EASY 10 pts.

could my back pain be from my bad mattress?

November 22nd, 2010

i have a very lumpy mattress and have had for a few months now (awaiting delivery of my new bed and mattress still)
i have been having slight back pain, not terrible but its certainly not nice. And when i lay on a hard surface my back throbs for a few seconds, it also hurts when i turn around quickly.
Im only fourteen and relatively healthy. I never fall asleep on my back, i always fall asleep on my stomach but it is possible that i roll over onto my back while im asleep.
could my mattress be causing this pain?
thank you for any answers in advance :)

Got a New Too-Firm Mattress?

November 21st, 2010

My parents recently got me this new mattress that is WAAYYY too firm. I swear you feel no difference between sleeping on that mattress and sleeping on a thin blanket covering a hardwood floor. No joke. If I sleep on my back, my lower back doesn’t even touch the mattress, that’s how firm it is. You know how it is healthy to have a straight spine? Well apparently, it curves back a bit at the top where the upper back is, that makes your upper back uneven to your lower back, because your upper back juts out more. The problem is, since my upper back sticks out more, it hits the mattress first, but since the mattress is too firm, and my upper back doesn’t sink in, it prevents my lower back from even touching the mattress. I feel as if more weight is being unevenly distributed onto my upper back and that can’t be good. I don’t get any back pains from this bed, yet (I’ve only had it for about 3 days) but it isn’t what I (or anybody else) would call comfortable.

Basically, is there anything I can do to soften up my bed? Without having to purchase anything?

Is it okay to have sex and sleep on a pole vault landing bed?

November 13th, 2010

I have a pole vault landing bed in one of my rooms at home. My girlfriend and I do sleep on regular mattresses during normal nights. The pole vault bed is the place we have sex. Every night after we did it, we would sleep naked on the bed till the next morning. We had the bed for a little more than a year now, and judging by our frequency, the number of nights we spent on it is definitely in 3 figures (I guess that’s a healthy figure?).

My girlfriend is a pole vaulter. It was initially her idea to do it on our pole vault bed. It’s such a comfortable place to have sex that after the first time, it became the only place we do it since. However, she told me that sleeping on that bed is not good for our muscles at all. But we still do it because that is really our fantasy and we wanted to fulfill each other’s fantasy.

Is it really not good to have sex and sleep on a pole vault landing bed? If it is, why is it not good? And what could it cause us?
The pole vault bed has really became a paradise for us right now. We made it feel so special by not touching the bed at all during other times. During the only times we are on the bed, we are either having sex, or sleeping naked after a wonderful and passionate night.

Thanks for those who answered. After reading your answers, I’m aware of the risks. I realized that the reason that causes those risks is probably the bed being too soft. Correct me if I’m wrong here. I always thought that if the bed is soft enough to cushion 4 meter landings of my pole vaulter girlfriend, it would make a really good bed as well.

Keep those answers coming, I hope to get a clearer picture. The thing I’m worrying now is that both of us couldn’t readjust ourselves to having sex at places other than this pole vault bed. I still hope we wouldn’t need to. :)

is it Legal to live in a car in southern California? and if it's ok, where?

November 3rd, 2010

Im not a homeless or anything like that. Im a professional but with no money right now, lost my job and im moving back to southern california. I love it there and that’s where I want to spend the rest of my life. However, with little money I won’t be able to rent an apartment to start out.
Im also not gonna live in any type of assisted living or anything like that. im a young professional, clean cut. very positive, healthy….. I just want to go to california and find a job there. once im working and making money again then I will find a roommate to get an apartment or something like that…. but at first i need to live in my car, get a gym membership to shower and change to clean clothes for my interviews, etc. but i just want to know if it’s legal to live in my car. or what areas of southern california are ok to just park your car and sleep there, i have a 4 door sedan type car so i think i could put a mattress in the back…

Help! i cant sleep because im overheating at night?

October 28th, 2010

So i recently was diagnosed with an ulcer. I was on antibiotics for 2 weeks and it completely killed the h. pylori bacteria. In the process i somehow lost 12 lbs, my blood pressure was regular again (i was slightly hypertensive before) my cholesterol shot down tons of points to a level better than most healthy people, my triglycerides were way down as well. My doctor was amazed for he had never seen such a drastic change in numbers. He ran another blood test to make sure nothing had been mixed up at the lab somehow and it came back the same. He was simply astonished and so i left his office feeling pretty good and wanting to lose more weight and change my habits so i would never have to experience another ulcer again.

About 1 week later i started experiencing trouble sleeping. at first, it felt like bugs were jumping on me and then jumping off. I wasn’t finding bite marks or anything just crawling. I assumed it was bed bugs initially but i have found no evidence (bites, droppings, shed skin, etc) of any bugs whatsoever. I then thought it could be fleas or lice jumping on me but not biting but that isn’t common with their typical behavior. I slept at my girlfriends house one night to see if i would still feel the crawling sensation. what she found kinda scares me and i cant find anything online relevant to my problem.

So apparentely once i fell asleep, i started talking in my sleep which isn’t typical for me at all. She noticed that shortly after i became insanely hot. Like i was soaked in sweat and she couldn’t lay next to me bc i was radiating heat. I woke up at about 4am and sat up. I could feel the radiant heat from the mattress. It felt like there was a heating pad underneath me or something. I quickly grabbed a thermometer to check my temperature. It read 97.5 which shows no elevation at all. I had my girlfriend take her temp to make sure the thermometer wasn’t uncalibrated or something. Hers read 98. since then, ive woken up many times (usually around 4 or 5am) and cant go back to sleep. All day i feel lethargic and exhausted. I dont know if its related to the antibiotics i took for the ulcer or not. I found that often people who take such antibiotics as Flagyl kill all of the bad bacteria as well as the good bacteria and can sometimes get an overgrowth of yeast as a result which can lead to crawling sensations and overheating. Does this sound like a legitimate explaination or is it likely to be something different? I haven’t been able to see a doctor bc i work every day and as a chef its hard to really get days off. I thought it would eventually subside but every night i feel like im on fire. does anybody have any suggestions or ideas? Please help!

Every time I try to go to bed, it feels like I have to urinate?

October 24th, 2010

I volunteer at a hospital, but I forgot to ask during my last shift.

Virtually every night for the past few months, my bladder has seemingly been acting up, from the moment that my body hits the mattress to the moment that I wake up in the morning. I feel a sort of pressure welling up around my glans head (I’m a guy, if you didn’t figure that out), a pressure that would normally indicate that I have to empty my bladder. Yet every time I get up to do so, I find that I don’t really "have to go". It’s extremely annoying, and this new-found urinary "issue" has been turning me into somewhat of an insomniac. Every time I try to ignore the pressure, things just get worse and worse.

It almost feels as if the pressure is being caused by urine traveling up my urethra and "waiting" to come out. As I said though, every time I try to relieve myself by going to the bathroom, I find that I wasted a trip.

There’s no pain involved with this condition, and other physical symptoms have manifested themselves, save for the mental stress that has been thrust upon me as the result of this particular problem. No other areas of my body seem to be affected, and I’ve otherwise been completely healthy, save for the occasional pressure-headache.

I’m sixteen years old.

My cat won't stop urinating and sometimes defecating in the house! what can i do?

October 19th, 2010

He is a 9 year old cat who has never once answered nature’s call outside his litter box up until about 8 months ago. I was living in a condo and my roomate got a kitten, a little after that he started to, what i believed was, marking his territory and only in my bedroom which the kitten was quite keen on sneaking into. I have now moved into a house with my boyfriend which he bought and we have no other animals, except ferrets that he has been around for years and never bothered him once. He pees on everything, clean clothes, carpets, blankets, bags and even on an expensive futon mattress.

I took him to the vet and they did a urine analysis that concluded there was no medical issue and it was strictly behavioral. The house is very large and the cat is well fed, very healthy and gets an astounding amount of love and attention. I don’t know whats wrong?

What can i do to make him stop?

My darn babby won't sleep in her crib?

October 18th, 2010

What the heck am I gonna do? She can roll over so I worry if I leave her on the bed she might roll off, even if it’s just a mattress on the floor she could get really hurt! Could I put a bunch of pillows and blankets around her am just running to the corner store while she naps.

BQ: Why won’t she sleep? I gave her a healthy dose of benadryl
It’s not nice to namecall abby

Why do my kittens keep doing this?

October 16th, 2010

i have 2 kittens. They are a bro and sis and they are super healthy and just so cute! :) they are about 9 or 10 weeks now. –Anyway,we moved into a brand new house. It has new carpet put in and it’s amazing! Anyway,so first of all my kittens keep smelling everything. We have been moved in for about a week now and the first day, they smelled the carpet and keep sniffing it,then raised their head up and had this face like ”omg ew!” –something like this —- :O —anyway lol,but they keep doing that face every time they smell something! I got a new mattress and box spring and when i took off the plastic after getting it home, they jumped on it and keep smelling it and made the same face. And when they lick themselves or each other, they keep making that face. –I told my aunt about it,(cause she has a lot of cats) and she says when they smell each other, they are picking up a scent and don’t know what to do about it. And i don’t understand that… i told her how they are doing that with everything in the house and she doesn’t know why… So,why are they?

The first paragraph, through the use of vivid visual imagery, couplled with frequent syntactic breaks provides information about the gloomy, despondent setting so as to establish the mood of the passage as one of gloomy and sombre.
Thank you, if you need to refer to the passage, here it is :
Gustad entered hesitantly and looked towards Dinshawji’s bed. The figure of the woman he expected to see, seated in vigil, was missing. He gazed absently upon the rows of sleeping patients, heard their breathing and snores. And if I did not know Dinshawji is gone, he would also have the sleeping look. Strange feeling. To stand beside his bed, and he cannot see me. Unfair advantage. As though I am spying on him. But who knows? Maybe Dinshu is the one with the advantage, spying from Up There. Laughing at me. The straight hard chair was by the bed. He had grown so used to it over the weeks. Dinshawji’s sheet rose in a sharp incline at the nether regions of the mattress. He glanced under the bed to see if the size twelve Naughty Boys were there by his trunk. Only the bedpan, its white enamel stark in the dark space. Beside it, the transparent flask-shaped urinal. Not all patients were asleep. Some watched intently, keeping an eye on this healthy one visiting after hours, when he had no business to be here. In the dim night-light of the ward their eyes focussed fearfully, drifted, then refocussed. When would it be their turn? How would it happen? And afterwards…? Down an old man’s face, tears were rolling slowly. Silently, on to the pillowcase dull white like his hair. Others were peaceful, reassured, as if they knew now that it was the simplest of things, was dying. After all, the one who had joked and laughed in their midst for several weeks had shown them how easy it was. How easy to go from warm and breathing to cold and waxen, how easy to become one of the smooth white figures in the carts outside the gates of Mount Mary.

My cat has started pooping and peeing on the floor?!?

October 9th, 2010

My cat who is just over 1 year old has pooped on the floor this past weekend and today i just walked in to the room her litter box was in and she was peeing on a deflated air mattress (We were storing it there, it’s an empty guest room). She has never had any problems using her litter box, and she just had a vet appointment about two weeks ago and they said she was a healthy girl.

What gives? Should i call the vet? i made sure that her litter was changed and the litter box was clean and she is still voiding outside of it…also, today, when she was peeing, i put her in her litter box after, and she jumped out, but shortly after jumped in and pooped in it, no problem.

Why do I get 12 hours of sleep a day?

October 8th, 2010

For the last week or so I have been sleeping for 12 hours a day. I am a 14 year old girl, and so I do not have school at the moment. If I fall asleep at 1am I will wake up at 1pm, etc. As far as I know, I do not snore, jerk around, or become paralyzed. I usually have a bit of trouble falling asleep, and I also have a very bad, very squeaky mattress. When I wake up I am usually a bit sore, but not too badly that I need a massage or something. I am also not a very heavy sleeper. I do not take naps, but will often feel tired during the day. I get a bit of exercise, but not a whole lot. I am a little bit underweight, but I try to eat healthy foods and get at least some exercise every day. Thank you for your time!

How to overcome fear of cockroaches? (with story)?

October 7th, 2010

I am afraid of cockroaches. As in seriously afraid of them. When I was 12, there was a cockroach in our class and when it was about 1m away from me, I literally JUMPED on the chair. Got lectured by the teacher of course but it was an instant reaction. When I was 10, I was sick and had to get up in the middle of the night for my medication. The night light was on so I saw a cockroach like figure running behind the wardrobe. I squeezed between my parents bed but still couldn’t sleep for the next hour or so.

This fear started when I was 3. I used to sleep on the mattress in the room beside my parents bed. One Sunday morning, I woke up at 7(I was a very healthy 3 year old). The first image I saw was a cockroach right in front of me, on my favorite pillow(I was hugging it). I put down my pillow and ran downstairs and since then, I couldn’t get the image of the cockroach and its antenna out from my mind! My fear got even worse last week. I went into my room to turn on the computer switch. I have the habit of not turning on the light because I already know where to slot in the switch and all. Suddenly, I heard a crushing sound upon stepping in my room. I was stunned for a few seconds and started praying it was not what I think it was. I turned and on the lights. I STEPPED ON A BLOODY COCKROACH BAREFOOT! Its intestines were out and its juices was around the floor. I swore I almost fainted. After staring at it for a min or so, I hopped to the toilet and washed my foot three times before wiping it hardly with a cloth.

This fear has always been a problem I face in everyday life. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about this fear of mine and how to overcome it. Thanks =)
I think it’s their intestine. It’s green and icky.

How can I deal with my flea problem?

October 7th, 2010

About a week ago, in an attempt to help a stray cat I found on my porch (I live on a very busy road), I let the cat in for about an hour before my friend was able to pick me up and help take it to the shelter. At the time the cat looked healthy, well taken care of and I examined for fleas and ear mites but didn’t see any.

Two days ago I started noticing a few fleas and began to worry. I previously have had cats and when they got fleas there was little problem getting rid of them. But now that it is just me I am worried since the fleas have found their way into my bedroom. They are mainly in my room (which is carpeted) and the living room where the cat was originally (there are two couches & hardwood floors in the living room).

Last night a friend helped me bug bomb the place using Hartz Ultra Guard Plus and everything seemed to go okay. But today, returning to my apartment after letting it air out, I am already noticing a few fleas. It does not appear as bad as before but there are definitely quite a few in the living room and a few still in my room.

The living room is never used right now (I rarely go in there) but seems to be the worst of the two, and though I was already going to throw one couch out I was hoping to salvage the other. But after using the bug bomb there still are a lot more fleas than I’m happy with.

I bought Raid spray that is specifically for fleas and started to coat my mattress, box spring, headboard, and was set to do the carpet when it ran out, but I was planning on getting more. I am just terrified now that if that doesn’t work what I should do. I was hoping the flea bombs would have been the end of it.

Is there anything else I can do or should be doing to stop this? According to my friend, I do not have a full on infestation just yet, and I am hoping that if I catch it now I can prevent any other damage. My biggest fears are that I am moving back with my parents soon and I do not want to bring this problem with me. I do not know if there is any hope left for the couch but my bed, at least, I would like to save.

Sorry this post is long, but here’s essentially what I’m worried about/dealing with:

-I used a flea bomb (Hartz) yesterday and am still seeing a few fleas today (I have seen 2 fleas in my bedroom in the last hour and a half, but this is considering that I have been pulling apart my bed and crawling on the floor). Will the bug bomb chemicals continue to affect and kill them or should they all have been dead aftewards?

-I have some furniture that has fleas on them. Will spraying them down with Raid spray be enough?

-I am also leaving today for a week and am hoping that my absence (me being the only one living here, no pets) will also help in this process. My friend will be in town and said he would come in and check how things were going and is continuing to help me get rid of them.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

How do I vent my anger?

October 5th, 2010

So I’ve had depression since middle school, and I’m a senior now. Since junior year it’s become that I’m more angry than sad, because alot of drama has been happening. Last night I started punching boxes and my mattress, and it freaked out my dad and he told me it wasn’t healthy for me.

I don’t know how else to vent my anger. I’ve gone to counseling for a year, but I stopped because I never liked it. I just feel like talking isn’t enough anymore. My dad offered dance lessons, and I was into the idea, but then I saw a website for a local boxing club, and I think I could really get into that. I think that could be my thing. I’ve never been into sports, and I think that could be a sport I could really like. But I’m not sure my parents will like the idea.

What should I do?

Sore legs while sleeping, stiff legs during the day?

October 4th, 2010

For years now, I have had severe leg pain/soreness while laying down to sleep. I have to roll over every hour or so to relieve the pain on each leg. I changed from an old spring mattress to a memory foam mattress and it is just as bad. It is getting worse as I put on weight. Right now I am 5′3" and 185 lbs, having put on 30 pounds in just the last two years. When I stand up after sitting for some time, my legs are so stiff I have to limp for a few feet before I can walk normally. I tried to exercise today and my right knee is so stiff I cannot stand up straight. I cannot climb a flight of stairs without getting winded. Is this just all straight side effects of obesity, or could I have some sort of cardiovascular problem? I want to make sure it’s healthy to exercise. I am almost 24 years old. Thanks!
